Hello?

My name is Byung-Wook Kim, the 16th president of the Korean Upper Gastrointestinal and Helicobacter Society.

President of the Korean College of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research

Byung-Wook Kim

Greetings to the esteemed members of the Korean College of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research,

Since its establishment as the Korean College of Helicobacter Research in 1997, our society has grown into a leading society in the field of gastroenterology in Korea, now boasting nearly 1,000 members. This remarkable growth has been made possible through the dedication and efforts of our senior professors. As I assume the role of president of this distinguished society, I am deeply aware of the responsibility it entails. Together with our new executive team, I will strive to further advance of our society. During my tenure, I aim to promote key initiatives that will contribute to the advancement of human health and scientific research through academic activities, which are the core mission of our society, as well as through collaboration with domestic and international academic societies.

First, I will strengthen international academic exchanges.
Since its inception in 2001, the Korea-Japan Joint Symposium celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024. Building of this foundation, I will expand our collaboration with other Asian countries and actively engage with the European Helicobacter and Microbiome Study Group, as well as academic societies in Africa. Ultimately, I aspire to establish the Asia-Pacific Helicobacter and Microbiome Study Group.

Second, I will expand opportunities for young gastroenterologists.
Recently, there has been a concerning decline in young gastroenterologists’ engagement in academic activities. To address this, I establish a "Young gastroenterologist task force" to gather their perspectives and actively incorporate their ideas into our society’s operations. Additionally, I will provide strong support to nurture the next generation of leaders in our society.

Third, I will further diversify our academic researches.
To enhance the scope and impact of our research, I will restructure and expand our current four research groups into six. Rather than focusing solely on individual research, I will prioritize researches that serve public health interests, such as evidence-based research for the development of guidelines. In addition, I will foster long-term research initiatives in collaboration with the Korean Research Association for Helicobacter and Microbiome.

Lastly, I will ensure that those who have contributed to our society’s growth receive appropriate recognition and benefits in accordance with our guiding principles. Additionally, I will meticulously prepare for the society’s 30th anniversary in 2027, marking this milestone with meaningful initiatives.

The progress of our society is not the result of individual efforts alone, it depends on the active and voluntary engagement of all our members. I sincerely ask for your continued support and participation, and I wish you and your families happiness and well-being.

Thank you.

President, Korean College of Helicobacter
and Upper Gastrointestinal Research
